About

Founded by Harold Schmittinger and Nicholas Rodriguez in 1961, Schmittinger & Rodriguez is Kent County’s oldest law firm. Currently, the firm employees approximately 15 attorneys and 50 support staff in three offices statewide.

The original office was located at the corner of State Street and the Green. In 1965, the firm began building a new office to house their expanding practice at 414 South State Street and relocated when construction was completed in 1966.

The firm continued to grow, adding nine more attorneys, and, in 1976, opened satellite offices in both Wilmington and Rehoboth Beach. By 1980, it had grown to more than a dozen attorneys. In 1990, the firm added another satellite office in Odessa (which was later moved to Middletown).

The firm’s attorneys boast a number of accomplishments. In 1982, John Schmittinger (brother of Harold Schmittinger) handled what was then the firm’s largest case to date, a multimillion dollar product liability action. Then, in 1984, Nicholas Rodriguez argued a case before the Supreme Court of the United States. Our attorneys have since litigated in all state courts in Delaware, as well as the District Court for the State of Delaware and the Third Circuit Court of Appeals, as well as courts in other jurisdictions (including Maryland, Pennsylvania and North Dakota). A number of prominent legal officials have served with the firm, including two Attorneys General and five judges.

Schmittinger & Rodriguez is also proud of its close connections to the US military. Founding partner Harold Schmittinger served in the military and seven other attorneys currently or previously employed by the firm have served as well.
